Dr. Muhammad Younus
Dr. Muhammad Yunus is a globally renowned Bangladeshi social entrepreneur, economist, and civil society leader. In 1976, Dr. Muhammad Yunus initiated an experiment in the village of Jobra, where he lent small amounts of money from his own pocket to impoverished women who were unable to secure traditional bank loans. The experiment proved to be a success, as the borrowers were able to repay their loans and improve their living conditions. Encouraged by this outcome, Yunus formally established the Grameen Bank in 1983. The bank’s unique model involved providing collateral-free loans to the poorest individuals, focusing primarily on women, who were often marginalized by traditional financial systems.
The Grameen Bank’s impact was transformative. By empowering women with financial independence and enabling them to contribute to their families’ incomes, Yunus helped lift millions out of poverty. The model has since been replicated in numerous countries, making microcredit a widely accepted tool for poverty alleviation.
